Neymar is making positive progress in his recovery from a calf injury that has raised doubts over his availability for the beginning of Brazil’s World Cup campaign, according to a statement from the team on Monday.

Brazil’s record goalscorer underwent an MRI scan, which revealed that he is responding well to treatment and continuing to improve. The update has increased hopes that he could feature for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad during the tournament in the United States.

The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that Neymar will continue with his planned rehabilitation and fitness programme under the supervision of the team’s medical staff.

Neymar was diagnosed with a calf problem late last month and has been working hard to regain full fitness ahead of the tournament, with Brazil set to begin their World Cup journey against Morocco in New Jersey on Saturday.

The 34-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has played a key role in Brazil’s previous three World Cup campaigns. However, his selection this time came as a surprise to some, as injuries have kept him from representing the national team since 2023.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said last week that Neymar should be available for either the opening match or the second game of the tournament, while stressing that there was no pressure to rush his return.
