Uzbekistan’s long-awaited FIFA World Cup debut begins with a daunting test against Colombia at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, as the Central Asian nation prepares to take on one of South America’s strongest sides.

While Uzbekistan are appearing at the finals for the first time in their history, Colombia return to the global stage determined to make up for the disappointment of missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Historic Moment for Uzbekistan

After years of near misses, Uzbekistan finally secured their place at a World Cup thanks to an impressive qualifying campaign that yielded ten wins, five draws and just one defeat from 16 matches.

The White Wolves have long been a consistent force in Asian football, reaching the knockout stages of the AFC Asian Cup in six consecutive editions, and they will now have the opportunity to test themselves against the world’s elite.

Their sole defeat during qualification came in a thrilling 3-2 loss to fellow World Cup finalists Qatar, while they conceded only seven goals across their final ten qualifying matches.

Seeking to maximise their chances on football’s biggest stage, the Uzbekistan Football Association appointed 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro as head coach following qualification. Although his tenure began with defeats against Canada and the Netherlands in pre-tournament friendlies, the performances themselves offered encouragement against quality opposition.

Colombia Eager to Make Their Mark

Colombia arrive in Mexico determined to remind the footballing world of their pedigree after failing to qualify for the previous World Cup.

Los Cafeteros finished third in the CONMEBOL qualification standings, scoring an impressive 28 goals along the way. Their recent World Cup record is also encouraging, having reached the knockout stages in both 2014 and 2018.

Current manager Néstor Lorenzo was part of the coaching staff during those successful campaigns and has overseen continued progress since taking charge. The 2024 Copa América runners-up have won five of their last eight friendly matches, drawing one and losing two, suggesting they are well prepared for their return to the biggest stage.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first-ever meeting between Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Uzbekistan have faced South American opposition on only a handful of occasions and have recorded just one victory against a CONMEBOL nation, defeating Bolivia 1-0 in March 2023.

Colombia, meanwhile, have developed a strong record against Asian opposition and are unbeaten in six matches against teams from the continent since 2022, winning five and drawing one.

Players to Watch

Uzbekistan’s hopes may rest heavily on captain and all-time leading scorer Eldor Shomurodov. The experienced forward contributed nine goals during qualification, scoring five and providing four assists. He also scored the winning goal in Uzbekistan’s only victory against South American opposition.

For Colombia, Liverpool star Luis Díaz remains the headline attraction. Only Lionel Messi scored more goals during CONMEBOL qualifying, with Díaz netting seven times. He also enjoyed a remarkable club season with Bayern Munich, registering 26 goals and 23 assists across all competitions.

Team News

Uzbekistan could be without midfielder Azizjon Ganiev, who is struggling to recover from an injury sustained during the friendly defeat to Canada.

Colombia have a slight concern over striker Jhon Córdoba, who missed both pre-tournament warm-up matches and faces a race against time to be fit.

Key Statistics

  • Uzbekistan conceded exactly two goals in each of their last three defeats.
  • Four of Uzbekistan’s previous five internationals were goalless after 30 minutes.
  • Eight of Colombia’s last ten matches have produced over 2.5 goals.
  • Seven of Colombia’s previous eight victories have been achieved by a margin of two goals or more.

Prediction

The occasion alone will provide huge motivation for Uzbekistan, but Colombia possess considerably more experience and attacking quality at this level.

With players such as Luis Díaz capable of deciding matches on their own, and with Colombia carrying momentum from a strong qualification campaign and recent Copa América run, the South Americans should have enough to begin their World Cup campaign with a convincing victory.

Prediction: Uzbekistan 0-3 Colombia

Betting Angle: Colombia to win by two or more goals.
