Cabo Verde entered their first-ever World Cup match as massive underdogs. However, they proved superbly organised from back to front. While Spain predictably commanded the lion’s share of possession, they grew increasingly frustrated by their spirited and fiercely determined opponents.

Spain’s clearest opening of the first half arrived when Marc Cucurella set up Ferran Torres, who rattled the crossbar. The ball rebounded sharply to Mikel Oyarzabal, but his instinctive header was kept out by an outstanding reflex save from Vozinha.

Desperate for a breakthrough, De la Fuente subbed on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The winger immediately injected dynamism and unpredictability into the Spanish attack. Even so, Cabo Verde marshalled the youngster excellently, limiting clear-cut opportunities.

Oyarzabal had one final chance late in the game but fired off-target, ensuring Cabo Verde held on to bank a historic World Cup point.
