Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will not be available for the team’s World Cup opener against Morocco on Saturday, June 13.

The 34-year-old forward earned his first Brazil call-up since suffering an ACL injury during a friendly against Uruguay in October 2023, with his return coming just in time for the tournament.

However, Neymar picked up a calf injury only weeks before the World Cup, leaving doubts over his availability. Despite the setback, Ancelotti decided to keep the experienced attacker in the squad.

The Brazil manager has now revealed that Neymar will not recover in time to feature in the opening match, dealing a major blow to the five-time world champions ahead of their first game.

Speaking ahead of Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco, which is expected to be their toughest match in the group stage, Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Neymar is still not ready to return.

The Brazil boss revealed that the experienced forward is working hard on his recovery but will not be available for the opening fixture.

“He is working hard to get back to full fitness as soon as possible. We hope he can return to full training next week,” Ancelotti said.

Neymar’s absence will be a major setback for Brazil as they begin their World Cup campaign, with the five-time champions facing a strong Morocco side in their first match.
