Malta Under-21 National Team Head Coach Davide Mazzotta has highlighted the value of international exposure for young players, stressing that friendly matches such as Thursday’s encounter against Moldova are crucial for their long-term development.

Malta’s Under-21 side will take on Moldova on Thursday, 4 June, at the Municipality Stadium in Orhei, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 CET. The match will be broadcast live on TVMSport+.

Mazzotta has selected a 22-player squad for the fixture, including a number of promising newcomers, while several players remain unavailable due to injury.

Speaking ahead of the match, Mazzotta emphasised that the fixture offers both a competitive challenge and an opportunity to assess emerging talent within the national setup.

“As this is a friendly match, it gives us the chance to closely evaluate younger players who have performed well with their clubs and who fit the philosophy we are trying to build within the national team,” he said.

“These matches are extremely important for the players’ growth, while also helping the coaching staff gain a deeper understanding of the squad and the potential of each individual.”

Mazzotta reiterated the importance of providing the team with regular international opportunities, allowing players to test themselves against quality opposition.

“We approach every match with the same level of commitment and professionalism, regardless of whether it is a friendly or a competitive fixture,” he noted. “While it is still too early to determine how this experience will influence our competitive matches in September, particularly with the summer break limiting our time together, I am confident that it will contribute positively to the players’ development.”

The Malta coach added that both the players and coaching staff are committed to making the most of every international window.

“We have placed a strong emphasis on the fundamentals during this camp, perhaps more than ever before, with the aim of embedding these principles into the players’ game.”

He believes that consistent exposure to international football can have a significant impact on the team’s future progress.

“Regular matches against international opposition are invaluable. The more opportunities our players have to compete at this level, the faster they will develop both individually and collectively as a team.”

Mazzotta acknowledged that injuries and limited preparation time remain challenges, but praised the continued support of the Malta FA and the clubs, describing their cooperation as vital to the ongoing development of the national team programme.
