Early goals sink Malta U21 as Northern Ireland claim 2–0 Victory in Belfast

The Malta U21 National Team suffered a 2–0 defeat away to Northern Ireland in their second UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifier, with two first-half goals enough to secure the hosts all three points.
Northern Ireland started brightly, pressing high and unsettling the Maltese defence. The breakthrough came early in the 7th minute when a lobbed pass found Makenzie Kirk, who headed home after a moment of hesitation at the back.
Malta settled after the opener, gaining more composure in possession, but the home side doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute. A well-delivered corner found Michael Forbes, who connected cleanly with a half-volley into the top corner for 2–0.
In the 41st minute, Northern Ireland came close to adding a third when Eoin Kenny met a lofted pass with a powerful volley, but Hugo Sacco pulled off an excellent save to deny him. The hosts went into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead.
After the restart, Malta tried to impose themselves more but struggled to bypass Northern Ireland’s press. As the match wore on, the Maltese team grew in confidence, stringing together better passages of play, though they rarely troubled goalkeeper Stephen McMullan.
Northern Ireland continued to look sharp in the final minutes, with Sacco producing further saves to keep the scoreline unchanged.
Malta ultimately couldn’t find a way back, and Northern Ireland held on for a 2–0 win.
Malta will now return home to face Georgia at the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday, 14 October, with kick-off at 19:00 CET.
