Tesse Confident Ahead of Malta Women’s Clash with Switzerland

Malta Women’s National Team Head Coach Manuela Tesse has expressed confidence in her squad’s preparations ahead of Friday’s UEFA Women’s European Qualifiers encounter against Switzerland.
The national team heads into the match following an extensive training period, with domestic-based players working regularly within the national team setup. The camp also provided an opportunity for several players from Malta’s Under-17 and Under-19 national teams to train alongside the senior squad, a move Tesse believes is crucial for the continued development of women’s football in Malta.
“We have prepared very well for this match, not only over the past few days but throughout the last month,” Tesse said. “We have worked consistently with our local players and integrated a number of youth internationals into the senior environment. Giving these young players the chance to train with the national team is both motivating and inspiring, and I believe it has been extremely beneficial.”
Malta faces a significant challenge against a strong Swiss side, with the match set to be the first international fixture played at the newly inaugurated AIL Arena in Lugano.
Tesse emphasised the importance of teamwork, discipline and maintaining tactical organisation against one of Europe’s leading teams.
“We need to remain committed, aggressive and organised both in and out of possession. If every player performs to the best of her ability and we function collectively as a team, I believe we can produce a positive performance. Our strength lies in working together rather than relying on individuals.”
Although Malta’s relegation from League B has already been confirmed, Tesse believes the campaign has provided several encouraging signs, particularly given the challenges posed by injuries to key players.
“Despite the relegation, I feel we have played good football throughout the campaign. We have managed to score against strong opponents, which is an important positive. We are building for the future and developing a new generation of players. This is a very young squad and that gives us confidence for the years ahead.”
The Malta coach also highlighted the long-term value of competing against high-level opposition, stressing that the experience gained by the current group will be vital for the team’s continued progress on the international stage.
Friday’s fixture against Switzerland presents another valuable opportunity for Malta’s emerging talents to test themselves against top-level opposition as the team looks to finish its qualifying campaign on a positive note.
Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30, with the match being streamed live on TVMSport.mt.
