De Leo Encouraged by Malta’s Response Against Slovakia Ahead of Azerbaijan Test

Malta National Team Head Coach Emilio De Leo has praised the attitude, commitment and professionalism shown by his players during Monday’s international friendly against Slovakia as preparations continue for Friday’s encounter with Azerbaijan.
Speaking ahead of Malta’s second friendly of the June international window, De Leo highlighted the character displayed by his squad despite suffering a late defeat against the Slovaks.
“What impressed me most was the motivation and desire shown by the players to deliver a strong performance,” De Leo said. “Every player involved gave their maximum effort. We made ten changes during the match and each player who came on contributed with the right mentality. From a tactical perspective, their impact was extremely important.”
The Malta coach also expressed satisfaction with the performances of several younger players who were handed valuable opportunities in the starting line-up.
“We had a number of young players making their first starts for the national team. At that stage, the physical aspect becomes less important than demonstrating your commitment, your hunger and your willingness to serve the national team.”
Among those singled out for praise were Kean Scicluna and Keyon Ewurum, while De Leo also acknowledged the positive influence of substitutes Cannavo and Andrea Zammit.
“I was very pleased with the performances of Kean and Keyon. Cannavo and Andrea Zammit entered the game at a difficult moment when we were under pressure, and they provided exactly the energy and support we needed. Overall, I was satisfied with the contribution of every player.”
Looking ahead, De Leo stressed that places in the squad must continue to be earned through hard work and performance.
“We still have players within the squad whose level we need to assess, but it is important that we continue building on the path we have started. Opportunities will not be handed out as gifts. Players will earn them because they deserve them and because they can offer something valuable to the team.”
Meanwhile, Kean Scicluna reflected on a memorable evening after making his first start for the senior national team.
“I was extremely proud and happy to make my first start for Malta,” Scicluna said. “Naturally, there were some nerves at the beginning, but once I settled into the match I was able to enjoy the experience.”
While disappointed by the late goal that handed Slovakia victory, the young defender believes Malta can take considerable encouragement from the performance.
“We were disappointed to concede so late and lose the match in that manner. However, we know we gave everything against a very strong opponent and there are many positives we can take from the game.”
With the Slovakia fixture now firmly in the past, Malta’s full attention has shifted to Friday’s challenge against Azerbaijan.
“Our focus is now entirely on Azerbaijan. They are ranked above us and will provide another difficult test. We have prepared well and hopefully we can translate the work we have done on the training pitch into a strong performance on matchday.”
Malta take on Azerbaijan on Friday at the Haladás Sportkomplexum in Hungary, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
