Middlesbrough’s defeat to Hull in the Championship play-off final could have significant long-term consequences for the Teesside club, who came agonisingly close to securing a return to the Premier League after a demanding season.

As a result, the team are set for at least another year in the second tier of English football, with that stay potentially extended further if manager Kim Hellberg is forced to sanction the departure of key players to balance the squad.

It is a disappointing outcome for Boro, and while chairman Steve Gibson is expected to resist any attempts to prize away his standout performers, some players may feel tempted to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Among them is England Under-21 international Hayden Hackney, who is approaching the final year of his contract. Although his potential departure would be a significant blow, a transfer fee for the midfielder could provide Middlesbrough with valuable funds to reinvest and strengthen the squad in other areas.

It is understood that several clubs are monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation, with Manchester United among the latest to show interest.

A potential move to Old Trafford would also carry a familiar link, as former Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick played a key role in Hackney’s development during his time at the Riverside, adding a layer of logic to any possible reunion.

Vision and creativity

Aside from a brief loan spell at Scunthorpe United in the 2021/22 campaign, Hackney has spent his entire professional career with Middlesbrough.

Standing at 5ft 10in, the midfielder is more than capable of coping with the physical demands of the Championship, but it is his vision, intelligence, and creativity that have truly made him stand out at this level.

He is particularly effective at driving forward from midfield and committing defenders. During the 25/26 season, he attempted 128 take-ons—the highest total in the Middlesbrough squad. Of those, 57 were successful, just one shy of Callum Brittain, who recorded the club’s best success rate with 58 completed dribbles.

Hackney also made a significant impact in advanced areas, registering five carries into the opposition penalty box—more than any of his Middlesbrough teammates.

In terms of overall involvement, only Aidan Morris and Luke Ayling recorded more than his 806 total carries over the course of the season, highlighting his constant presence in possession and willingness to progress play.

Ayling was also the only player to surpass Hackney’s 228 progressive carries of 10 yards or more, a metric that tracks sustained forward movement towards the opposition goal in a single action.

The midfielder’s attacking output was equally impressive. He produced 17 chances directly following a progressive carry and finished the campaign with 85 chances created in total—the highest tally in the Middlesbrough squad.

Hackney’s influence in possession was further underlined by his 875 passes into the final third, a figure unmatched by any other Middlesbrough player during the season. He also completed 1,420 successful passes in the opposition half, a total only bettered by Aidan Morris, who recorded 1,577.

Maintaining an impressive passing accuracy of 86.37%, it is unsurprising that interest from Premier League clubs continues to grow.

All-round contribution

Beyond his passing range, Hackney matched Morgan Whittaker’s return of seven assists, further highlighting his creative output in the final third.

He also delivered 42 successful crosses, a tally surpassed only by Callum Brittain and Matt Targett, both of whom registered 49.

His 83 successful lay-offs—the highest in the squad—demonstrate his ability to link play effectively in tight areas, while a tackle success rate of 66.67% also places him among Middlesbrough’s most reliable performers defensively.

Hackney’s all-round contribution is further highlighted by his involvement in 408 one-on-one duels and 215 ball recoveries, reinforcing his value on both sides of the game.

While he is yet to test himself at the highest level, his consistent statistical output suggests he is well-equipped to make the step up. Former Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, who oversaw his development, would arguably be best placed to judge whether the midfielder is ready to thrive in the Premier League.

Man Utd must act decisively

Manchester United have adopted a more progressive and expansive approach under their current leadership, and Hackney’s profile could fit seamlessly into that system, potentially enhancing their midfield creativity further.

However, any potential deal may hinge on valuation. Chairman Steve Gibson is aware that the midfielder could leave for free in just a year if no new contract is agreed, but he is still expected to demand a strong fee should the club reluctantly decide to sanction a sale.

From Michael Carrick’s perspective, the addition of a creative young English midfielder who would immediately strengthen squad depth and provide healthy competition for places represents an appealing opportunity. His presence could also prove valuable in managing rotation, particularly with Manchester United competing in the Champions League next season.

However, United are not alone in their interest, and that competition places added urgency on any potential negotiations. If they are serious about securing his signature, they may need to act swiftly to avoid being beaten to the deal.
